Attention: South Carolina Dismantlers and Scrap Metal Recyclers

In 2006, the South Carolina Legislature passed H 3922 into law requiring vehicle dismantlers and scrap recycling facilities to remove automotive mercury convenience light switches before the vehicle is crushed or shredded.

As part of this program, ELVS will provide education and outreach about the program.  ELVS also will provide collection buckets and pay for the cost of shipping and recycling the switches removed by dismantlers and scrap metal recyclers.

Vehicle Recyclers and Scrap Recycling Facilities, (as defined in South Carolina Section 44-96-185), participating in the ELVS program are entitled to a credit in the amount of $2.50 for each mercury switch collected and submitted in accordance with the ELVS program.  These credits may be used to reduce the taxpayer’s corporate income tax liability or corporate license fees.  Please contact the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental control for additional information on tax credits.
