Attention: Michigan Vehicle Dismantlers and Scrap Metal Recyclers

In September of 2006, The End of Life Vehicle Solutions Corporation (ELVS) and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) began converting the existing Michigan Mercury Switch Sweep (M2S2) program to the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program (NVMSRP).

The M2S2 program, previously run as a volunteer partnership between MDEQ and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, will continue and grow under the NVMSRP to provide an efficient means to recycle automotive mercury convenience light switches.  ELVS had already been working with the M2S2 program and earlier in 2006 provided a central collection point as well as recycling for over 16,000 switches that were collected through the M2S2 program.

As a first step in implementing the NVMSRP, ELVS will provide vehicle recyclers with collection buckets and will pay the costs of transportation, retorting/recycling or disposal of elemental mercury from the automotive switches. ELVS also will provide educational materials to promote vehicle recycling and proper management of mercury switches.
