Attention: Maryland Vehicle Dismantlers and Scrap Metal Recyclers

During its 2009 session, the Maryland Legislature passed HB 1263, a mercury switch removal act, to require vehicle dismantlers and scrap recycling facilities to remove automotive mercury convenience light switches before the vehicle is crushed or shredded.

As part of this law and for buckets returned after February 15, 2010, ELVS will pay $4.00 for each mercury convenience light switch and $6 for each mercury containing ABS assembly.

Please note that recyclers must complete a form containing the year, make, and model of the vehicle from which the switch was pulled and include it in the switch collection bucket in order to receive payment. Buckets returned without log forms will not receive a bounty payment. Log forms will be sent in buckets and also are available on this web page on the left side under Links. ELVS also will provide educational materials on switch location and removal as well as collection buckets.

ELVS also will pay for the shipping and recycling the switches/assemblies removed by dismantlers and scrap metal recyclers.
